Extend your Stay

September is one of the best months to visit Greece.  Whether you are interested in Greece’s beautiful islands, its mainland, or its history, you will not be disappointed!

The options are countless but we gather below some of our favorite spots – both around Mani and the Peloponnese (home to our wedding events) but also elsewhere in Greece if you want to make a holiday out of it.

DISCOVER

THE MANI PENINSULA & PELOPONNESE

AREOPOLI

The historic heart of Mani, known for its stone tower houses, cobblestone streets, and lively central square.

LIMENI

A picturesque seaside village with crystal-clear waters, waterfront tavernas, and a relaxed, elegant atmosphere.

KARDAMYLI

A charming coastal town with historic stone houses, scenic walks, and a lush landscape.

A LITTLE FURTHER AWAY

IN THE PELOPONNESE…

MONEMVASIA

Often described as a “living museum,” Monemvasia is a medieval fortress town carved into a massive rock rising from the sea.  Stroll through narrow stone alleys, discover Byzantine chapels, enjoy sea-view terraces, and soak in the romance of one of Greece’s most atmospheric destinations.  We highly recommend the Kinsterna Hotel if you’re planning a visit to Monemvasia – it’s truly a sanctuary.

MYSTRAS

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mystras is a beautifully preserved Byzantine city built into a hillside near Sparta.  Explore ancient monasteries, palace ruins, and fresco-filled churches while taking in sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

NAFPLIO

One of Greece’s most picturesque towns, Nafplio features Venetian architecture, colorful streets, boutique shops, and seaside cafés.  With its relaxed pace and charm, it’s an ideal stop for couples or anyone looking to unwind.

ATHENS

No list would be complete without Athens – the heart of Greece.

If you’re arriving at/departing from Athens, we highly recommend staying at least one or two nights in town to experience the city’s unique blend of ancient history and modern energy.  Visit the Acropolis and Parthenon, wander through the picturesque streets of Plaka, enjoy rooftop dining with views of the illuminated monuments, and indulge in some of Greece’s best food and wine.

ISLANDS

If you’re looking to plan a holiday around our wedding, Greece’s islands are easily accessible by ferry or short flight from Athens.  While we firmly believe you cannot go wrong with any island, here are some of our favorites:

Spetses

Around 1h30–2h by ferry from Athens (Piraeus)

A car-free island known for its stone mansions, art galleries, and unforgettable sunsets.

Around 2h by ferry from Athens (Piraeus)

Elegant yet lively, with beach clubs, chic cafés, and a charming old harbor.

TINOS

Around 1h50 by ferry from Athens (Piraeus)

Known for its beautiful villages, artistic spirit – home to renowned marble-carving Greek artists –, gastronomy, and authentic Greek atmosphere – even some surfing.

SIFNOS

Around 2h30 by ferry from Athens (Piraeus)

Elegant and gastronomic destination with a refined vibe: whether you are looking to relax by the beach, organize a cruise to nearby islands, get on a hiking trail, or observe pottery-making by locals.

SERIFOS

Around 2h by ferry from Athens (Piraeus)

Rugged, traditional Greek island known for its raw beauty, unspoiled beaches, laid-back atmosphere, and cliffside capital that offers a host of restaurants and bars.

MILOS

Around 2h35 by ferry from Athens (Piraeus)

Known for its volcanic landscapes, diverse beaches, charming traditional villages, and delicious food, great for exploring and relaxing.

Legend has it couples visiting the island either marry or break up shortly after – so visit at your peril.  Lydia and Brian visited Milos in 2021 and here we are only a short five years later.

FOLEGANDROS

Around 3h45 by ferry from Athens (Piraeus)

A tranquil island with a white church towering over it, Folegandros is known for its stunning views, secluded beaches, and peaceful vibe.

PATMOS

Around 1h flight to Kos island and short ferry across, or 8h10 by ferry from Athens (Piraeus). Known as the Apocalypse island – where according to tradition, St. John was exiled and wrote the Book of Revelation –, Patmos blends natural beauty with a stylish atmosphere, offering whitewashed villages, dramatic landscapes, and a vibrant social scene.

Hydra

Closer to Athens…

Further down the sea…
